Algerian urologists (also called urological surgeons), like all urologists around the world, treat problems with the female urinary system and the male genitourinary system. They diagnose and treat disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, and male reproductive organs.

This article presents useful information on the nature of the work of doctors Algerian urologists, current procedures, sub-specialties and other roles that may interest you.

Nature of the work of Algerian urological doctors

Urologists are surgeons, but a large part of their job is also to manage ailments or diseases without resorting to surgery. They work with patients of all ages, both sexes, from babies and children to the elderly.

Conditions treated by these specialists include disorders that involve:

  • bladder - stones, tumors, birth defects, incontinence in women and men, and erectile dysfunction
  • urethra and prostate - tumors, obstructions and infections
  • male reproductive organs - impotence, tumors, birth defects, infection, sterilization and male infertility

Urology was the first surgical specialty to use minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopy and keyhole surgery, techniques that continue to be used regularly by urologists. Urology is also at the forefront of developments in robotic surgery.

Algerian urologists use a fine light instrument called a cystoscope to examine the bladder and urethra. Other conditions can also be treated with endoscopic (telescopic) procedures, including the removal of bladder tumors and the treatment of bladder and kidney stones.

Urological disorders are relatively common and represent up to 10 % of all general practitioner consultations and up to 20 % of all referrals to acute care hospitals.

Most urologic surgeries are elective and urologic emergencies are relatively rare. But treating acute kidney infections, urinary retention and trauma to the urinary tract can also be part of the workday.

Common procedures / interventions of Algerian urological doctors

Common open surgery procedures include:

  • removal of the bladder, kidney or prostate to treat cancer
  • elimination of kidney stones
  • forming an ostomy to divert urine into a bag
  • reconstruction of the bladder after removal
  • vasectomy
  • circumcision

Sub-specialties of Algerian urological doctors

The main sub-specialties are as follows:

  • endourology - conditions of the prostate, bladder, and kidneys, including kidney stones and small bladder tumors, treated using keyhole techniques
  • urologic oncology - cancer of the prostate, bladder, kidneys, testes and penis
  • functional urology - the study and treatment of symptoms of bladder and incontinence as well as neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and spinal injuries
  • andrology - male fertility and sexual health
  • reconstructive urology - repair and restoration of the lower urinary tract, and in particular the urethra, and management of diseases related to urethral stricture

It is also possible to specialize in pediatric urology.

The future role of urologists

Urology, as a specialty, has always been at the forefront of innovation and research. New technologies were quickly adopted and in many cases improved to achieve better patient outcomes. Researchers are interested in possible future directions of technological advances in urology. The role of increased miniaturization of urolithiasis treatment, robotic surgery and other minimally invasive techniques is discussed, as well as improved imaging and diagnostic techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging. and changes in ultrasound, potential applications of nanotechnology and tissue engineering. The future of urology remains extremely exciting. The use of advanced imaging that avoids radiation exposure has the potential to revolutionize diagnostics. There is even a real possibility that tiny nano-bots and nanobiotics are circulating in the bloodstream to their targets. While it is easy to get caught up in this technological storm, we should not become slaves to it. Clinical sense and rational judgment, always keeping the interests of the patient in mind, remain essential to the practice of the art of medicine.
